Tiling explained: a poster-sized contrast print from an ordinary home printer
For a print that hangs far away — a ceiling, the far wall of a cot — one sheet of paper is too small to hold a shape the eye can read. Tiling prints the image across several ordinary sheets that you trim and overlap into one big poster, no special printer required.

Key points
- Distance forces size. The eye reads angles, not centimetres. A shape that’s clear at the changing table becomes an invisible blur on the ceiling unless it grows with the distance — often past what a single A4/Letter sheet can hold (see Why the same contrast card won't work on the ceiling and the changing table and How big should it be? - Tiling splits the image across a grid of sheets. The generator works out the smallest grid (e.g. 3 × 4 = 12 sheets) that holds the whole shape at true size, and can rotate the paper (portrait/landscape) to use fewer sheets.
- Neighbouring sheets share a small overlap. Each sheet reprints a thin band (we default to 8 mm) of its neighbour’s edge. You trim the white border, overlap that band so the two halves coincide, and the seam disappears.
- The sheets carry their own assembly instructions. Every tiled PDF includes a
labelled map (
R2-C3= row 2, column 3), crop marks showing exactly where to cut, overlap guides, and tiny + registration marks that sit on top of each other when two sheets are aligned. A cover page spells out the six steps. - Two ways to ask for size. Tell it the final size you want (e.g. a 60 cm bullseye) or a sheet budget (“no more than 6 sheets”) — in budget mode it makes the image as large as the budget allows and tells you if that’s smaller than the distance ideally wants.
How the overlap actually works
Think of two sheets meeting at a vertical seam. The left sheet prints the image up to
its right edge; the right sheet starts a few millimetres back, so both sheets show the
same slice of image in that shared band. After you trim the white margins, you slide
the right sheet under the left until those two identical slices land on top of each
other — the registration + marks confirm it — then tape the back. Do that across the
whole grid and a dozen A4 sheets become one clean 60-plus-centimetre image.
The evidence
- [established science / math] That a far-away image must be physically larger is ordinary visual-angle geometry — the same optics behind all our sizing (research §04.2). Newborn acuity is low and improves month by month (AAO; PMC review), so the younger and farther the surface, the bigger and bolder the shape has to be (research §01).
- [standard print practice] Overlap/bleed with crop and registration marks is how posters have always been tiled; we simply generate it automatically. An overlap in the 5–10 mm range (research §04.6) hides seams and leaves a glue margin without wasting sheets — we default to 8 mm, and it’s adjustable.
- [our design opinion] Choosing the orientation and grid that minimise sheet count, centring the image across the sheets, and shipping an instructions page are usability choices, not clinical ones.
Practical takeaways
- Print at 100% / “Actual size” — never “Fit to page,” or every sheet shrinks and the seams won’t meet. Check the 100 mm bar on the cover page (see Print at 100%: why "Fit to Page" quietly ruins a correctly-sized card).
- Trim along the crop marks, then overlap by the printed band, upper-left sheet on
top, lining up the
+marks before you tape. - Fewer, bigger sheets are easier to assemble — A3 (if your printer takes it) or landscape can cut the sheet count; the tool picks the leanest layout for you.
- Laminate or mount out of reach, and remember a big ceiling print is for looking at, not for the cot mattress (safe-sleep first).
Caveats & disclaimer
Measure the real eye-to-surface distance before you generate — it’s the input people most often guess. Bigger than the minimum is a safe error; too small drops below what the child can see. This is a non-medical enrichment tool; for premature, CVI, or low-vision situations, follow your clinicians.
