Colour, in order: when babies see red, then blue, then green
Newborns see the world in light and dark, not colour; colour switches on in a known order — red first, then blue and yellow, then green, roughly over the first ~5–6 months. And here's the catch most people miss: even once colour arrives, a baby leans on light/dark difference far more than hue — so a "colourful" card only helps if it also stays high-contrast in brightness.

- At birth the retina is rod-led and the cones are immature: early vision is essentially monochrome. Start with pure black & white — it is the boldest, highest-contrast signal, not a lesser one.
- Colour comes online in sequence: red becomes discriminable first (from the first weeks), blue and yellow around 2–3 months, green around 4–5, broadly adult-like basic colour by ~5–6 months (corrected age).
- Hue is a weak cue for infants; luminance is the strong one. A vivid hue that is close to its background in brightness can be nearly invisible to a young baby.
- So the right way to add colour is to keep a strong light/dark contrast and let the hue ride on top — never trade brightness contrast for a prettier colour.
The evidence
Colour develops after luminance, and in order. Chromatic (colour) discrimination is poor at birth and matures over the first months, with long-wavelength (red) signals measurable early and the other hues following. Luminance beats hue — with a number. Here is the fact that reframes “colourful”: pure saturated red on white is only about a 4:1 contrast ratio by the standard luminance measure — below what we’d call high-contrast — whereas black on white is 21:1. Bright red simply is not very different from white in brightness, and brightness is what a young visual system keys on. Design rule that falls out of it. Introduce colour in the developmental order, but guarantee a luminance-contrast floor on every card so colour never costs visibility. Encoding that floor (we require a WCAG contrast of at least 7:1, and pair each hue against an achromatic or clearly lighter/darker ground rather than hue-against-hue) is our design decision, grounded in the evidence above. How the generator uses this
- Black & white is the default, and the only option offered early — because it is the strongest contrast there is.
- A staged colour mode unlocks hues in order as the profile’s stage advances (red → blue/yellow → green → full), so a card is only ever as colourful as the stage supports. On the direct-acuity path, you can also just choose a palette.
- Every coloured card is checked against a luminance-contrast floor: if a hue pairing is too low, it is deepened (or the design falls back toward black & white) automatically — the brightness contrast is never sacrificed for hue.
- Two accessibility palettes come from the same principle: a colour-blind-safe set (blue/orange/yellow, no red–green reliance) and a CVI set (saturated red/yellow, kept minimal) — both inherit the luminance guarantee, so they are bold first and colourful second.
Practical takeaways
- Don’t rush to colour. For a newborn, black & white is the most visible choice, full stop. It is not boring to them — it is the clearest thing on the page.
- When you do add colour, start with red, and keep the card boldly light-vs-dark.
- Judge a coloured card by squinting. If it still looks strongly light/dark when you blur your eyes, a baby can use it; if it goes flat and grey, the hue was doing all the work and it won’t read.
Caveats & disclaimer
Colour-vision timelines are population trends, not a schedule — individual babies vary, and the generator’s stage is a starting estimate, not a measurement of your child. This is about ordinary visual enrichment, not a medical or developmental claim. For premature infants use corrected age and follow your ROP guidance; for CVI, low vision, or any colour-vision concern, work with your eye-care team.
