The evidence

Preferential looking. In Robert Fantz’s “looking chamber” studies, infants — some only hours or days old — consistently looked longer at patterned cards than at plain ones, and showed a rough ordering in which bullseye and checkerboard patterns were among the most looked-at, ahead of plain fields and simple single shapes. Why bold and high-contrast. A newborn’s retina leans on rods and immature cones, so light/dark (luminance) contrast is the strongest signal to the developing visual system; high-contrast edges help a baby find, fixate, and hold a pattern. Curves and eyes. Infants show an early bias toward face-like, curved configurations; the bullseye’s concentric structure resembles an eye, which is part of why it’s so compelling. [established science, applied]

Bullseye-first is our call. Choosing the bullseye as the opening pattern (over an equally-valid checkerboard or stripes) is our design opinion, grounded in the above — not a claim that it’s measurably “best.” [our design opinion]

The full library. The generator now ships the whole evidence-pointed family set: bullseyes, stripes (straight, wavy, and width-graded), checkerboards, dot fields, spirals, sunbursts, single bold shapes (circle, square, triangle, cross, heart, star), simple schematic faces, and bold object silhouettes. Which families are offered — and how busy they get — shifts with the stage (see The Goldilocks principle: matching pattern difficulty to the stage): geometric high-contrast first, faces from ~2 months, real-world silhouettes from ~3–4 months. You can also generate a set of varied cards to rotate.
